Warbirds Over Delaware Update

Online pre-registration is continuing. To date we have received over 60 pilot and 100 aircraft registrations.

Volunteers are still needed for the many areas of responsibility at this, our largest event. In particular we need support for the Delta Dart building program on Saturday for kids; many grounds patrol troops to keep everything shipshape and in good order; folks to help set up and clean up; and registration, impound, and auction help. We also need someone with an open landscaping-type trailer who has the time to pick up some equipment on Thursday (or Friday morning) and return it on Monday morning. Please sign up online (at the Club website) or by contacting Carl Hauger (302-322-8580) or Pete Malchione (610-268-8129).

As in past years setup will occur on Wednesday evening (July 7th). We anticipate a light turnout on Thursday’s initial pilot arrival and setup so the field will be available for open flying all day. Warbird pilot registration will begin on Friday morning and mark the beginning of the staffed transmitter impound with flying restricted to registered pilots until 5 pm.

Raffle items to date include a large, framed print of this year’s Warbirds logo by Tony Albence.

Two new features have been added to the event so far. An Aircraft Auction will be scheduled for 5:30 pm on Saturday, July 10th. R/C aircraft and accessories can be entered into the auction. The Club will charge a commission of 10% of the selling price of each item. Mike Hudak has worked with full scale pilot Roger Robinson to create a great new raffle: the winner will receive a ride in a WWII-era warbird and will be able to choose between a PT-17 Stearman or a North American AT-6 Advanced Trainer. Only 100 tickets will be sold, at $10 each, so the odds of winning are good. You must be present at the drawing to win.

The Creamery at Woodside Farm (Hockessin, DE) has advised us that they plan to bring their ice cream trailer to the event this year – at least on Saturday and probably on Friday as well. We all enjoyed their ice cream two years ago and are delighted that they will be joining us once again.

   Stay tuned for further information.

Around the Pattern

Welcome To New Members

The officers and members of the Delaware R/C Club extend a warm welcome to our recent new and returning members: Adam Curatola, Elkton MD; Zachery Robinson, Newark DE; Jonathan Swift, Newark DE; and David West, Norristown PA.

Membership

Dick Stewart reports that Membership now stands at 190. He also reminds us that the requirement to display park stickers on your vehicles is effective beginning May 1st.

Field Notes

On the second try the field was rolled on Sunday, May 2nd. The plan is for a second rolling to occur just before Warbirds. Club President Brian Pasternak is arranging for the purchase and installation of a flag pole, to be placed in front of the pavilion. US, Delaware, and R/C flags will be flown on special occasions.

Support the New Garden Air Show

Check out the information about the New Garden Air Show on Sunday, June 13th. The show benefits the non-profit museum on the field as well as promotes aviation to the local community. The fixed costs for the museum and airport, which include insurance, have gone up over 100%; the success of this air show and subsequent ones is important for the health of the field. Some of us first caught the R/C aviation bug through attendance at this show and checking out Joe Patterson’s display. And, you even get the chance to see Matt Chapman’s aerobatic show and his new paint scheme!

Park Stickers Are Now “In Season”

May 1 was the magic date! Make sure you have purchased and affixed an annual park sticker to your vehicle. If you have any questions about the park fee system, please contact the Lums Pond State Park office at 302-368-6989.

Club Summer Meeting Locations

As usual, the June, July, and August meetings will be held at the R/C Field in the pavilion. Come early and get in a flight or two before the meeting begins. The current plan is to resume meeting at William Penn High School beginning in September if at all possible.

Blue Skies, Jim

John Stare has advised us that Jim McNeill passed away on the morning of May 22. Jim was Vice President of AMA District V. The Delaware R/C Club extends its condolences to his family.

Help Us Keep You Up To Date

In order to keep all our members informed of all Club news, it is crucial that the Club remain informed of all changes to our members’ contact information. Please send all changes of address and phone numbers to our Treasurer, Dick Stewart (302-368-2911 or BALTICPLY@aol.com). E-mail address changes should be sent to John Kirchstein (jakirchstein@comcast.net) and Carl Hauger (cewhauger@yahoo.com). Members who have Internet access can also make changes through the Club website. Contact Carl Hauger to obtain access information and your password.
